Thomas Skains Named General Chairman of Belk Bowl for Charlotte Collegiate Football

Belk Bowl and Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship To Be Promoted in Charlotte Business and Civic Communities

Charlotte, N.C.Charlotte Collegiate Football, owner of the Belk Bowl and the Charlotte organizing committee for the Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship, today announced that Piedmont Natural Gas Chairman, President & CEO Thomas Skains has been named General Chairman of the Belk Bowl and Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Charlotte Collegiate Football.  Mr. Skains will work with business and civic organizations and the CCF staff to promote both games in the Charlotte community. He has been on the CCF Board since its inception in 2010.

Board ChairJohnny Harris announced the appointment and said, “Tom Skains’ commitment to Charlotte is greatly appreciated and his leadership will help us make both of these games the successful events that Charlotte can fully embrace.  We look forward to working with him.”

“I am excited to work with our Board to make Charlotte a great host for two high profile post season college football games,” said Mr. Skains on his appointment. “I am especially honored to work with the first family of Charlotte - the Belks - to raise the profile of the Belk Bowl to something we are all proud of for many years.”

Mr. Skains joined Piedmont Natural Gas in 1995, after nearly 15 years with Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Corporation in Houston. Prior to his appointment as Piedmont’s Chairman, President and CEO, he served as Senior Vice President - Marketing and Supply Services. Mr. Skains has a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Sam Houston State University and a Doctorate of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Houston Law School.

Mr. Skains served as Chairman of the American Gas Association in 2009 and as Chairman of the Southern Gas Association in 2006, and currently serves on the Board of Directors for each organization. In addition, he presently holds positions on the Boards of Directors of BB&T Corporation and the Gas Technology Institute (GTI), and on the Boards of Trustees of Johnson & Wales University and the American Gas Foundation.

Mr. Skains has previously served on the Boards of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, the United Way of Central Carolinas and the Board of Trustees for Providence Day School. Mr. Skains was also co-chair of the 2004 & 2005 American Heart Association Charlotte Metro Heart Walks and the 2006 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Arts and Science Council Annual Fund Drive. Mr. Skains is an inactive member of the State Bar of Texas.

The Tenth Annual Belk Bowl will be playing in primetime on Tuesday, December 27, 2011 with an 8pm kickoff. The game, matching the ACC against the Big East, is televised on ESPN.

The first college bowl game to call the Carolinas home, the Belk Bowl has averaged almost 60,000 fans each year with three sellouts in its nine years. In addition, the game has reached over 25 million television households. In 2003, it was named one of the five best start-ups in sports over the past five years by the Sports Business Journal, behind only the NFL Houston Texans and ESPN the Magazine.

Charlotte Collegiate Football, a non-profit organization, runs the Belk Bowl and serves as the local organizing committee for the Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game. The Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game, in its seventh year, will be played in Charlotte on December 2, 2011. Last year’s sold out game was the first one played in Charlotte. The winner of the championship earns the ACC bid to play in the Discover Orange Bowl, if not selected for the BCS National Championship Game.
